 Homeward Bound

General Cocktail Cove InformationAttitudeAdjustment writes "As I finish up my last days here in Iraq and begin my journey home (Gainesville), I just wanted to say THANKS to all who keep this site up to date with photos, comments and stories from the Cove. Daily surfing of the site has kept me sane this time around and reminded me of all the good times with friends and family on the lake that I can’t wait to get back to. Although this boating season is almost done, I look forward to next summer in the cove and hope to see/meet some of the people I have seen in the photos. Thanks again to the Staff/Members of Cocktail-Cove.com. See you soon!!!!!!"

 Atlanta Leaking

General Cocktail Cove Informationmurphy91167 writes "In a recent article, Popular Mechanics magazine ranked Atlanta's water system as one of the worst infrastructure projects in the United States.

The magazine said it is a problem that must be fixed right away. But exactly how much water is Atlanta wasting in an aging water system that's under repair?

Officials say that every day, what amounts to 17 million gallons of water is wasted or "unaccounted for."

The city says it is repairing 800 leaks a month, to stop even more water from going to waste.

Charles Nelson said that under one manhole, the sound of rushing water was unmistakable. After hearing the rushing water for months, he and his friend, Samuel Kilby said they called the city, who came out and checked the problem.

"They said they think there was a busted line coming from somewhere," Kilby said. "They didn't say where the water was coming from, but they said the water was coming from all under the ground."

That was last summer. And still, the two fear countless gallons of water is being wasted.

"We're in a drought. We're trying to conserve water," Nelson said. "This was brought to their attention, and it hasn't been addressed."

Popular Mechanics said that despite the drought, 18 percent of the city's water was "hemorrhaging" through leaking pipes. That assessment was in 2003. Now, Atlanta's watershed says 14 percewnt, or what amounts to nearly 17 million gallons of water a day is unaccounted for.

"And it's actually declining 1 percent a year because of all the work we're putting into the system," said Atlanta Watershed Management's Janet Ward.

It is wasted water that Ward says is comparable to other major cities that average 10 percent, but the city is working to improve, as the city undergoes a $3.9 billion overhaul of the aging water and sewer system.

"The problem with the system that as big and as old as Atlanta's is, you're never going to repair the last leak," Ward said. "There is always going to be another leak."
